Hi!
We see that you’re looking for answers on –
“How to wash black jeans?”
One of the often understated cultural shocks of adulthood is – Laundry!
We got to wash colors separately?
Denim jeans transfer color?
Variety of detergents specific to fabrics?
Warm and cold temperature washes?
It’s a lot of math for just a fresh pair of comfortable black denims. But hey, when you’re buying a pair that’s oh so conscious in its production and manufacturing, you owe it to the fabric. This process will only make your favorite pair last longer and make you a part of a sustainable community
Let’s start with Step 0 – Play some fun songs. Laundry might be a chore but we don’t have to treat it like one!
How to avoid color transfer when washing denim jeans?
Step 1: First Wash is a lone-wash
This is a widely informed, often missed rule about black denim jeans – You do not wash it with a full load of laundry, especially the first wash. The way your denim gets its stunning color is through the following process
Dip – Oxidize – Dip – Oxidize – Rinse
And although we read rinse, the oxidation carries on until the color is fully dry and absorbed.
So when a pair of American Eagle black jeans are worn, it won’t rub off any color on your skin. But the strong detergents will do their work, combined with hot water, your new jeans are likely to transfer their color onto any other garment you wash them with
How to avoid color loss when washing denim jeans?
Step 2: Turn it inside out and wash in cold water.
Denims are rinsed inside out. So any color loss does not happen, when the stunning is happening. We strongly recommend doing the same every time you wash your jeans.
And when you throw it in with other clothes of the same color (black), remember to select the cold wash setting. Why? The oxidation that we referred to in step 1. Hot water can rinse out the color.
This also prevents any harm to any zippers or buttons on the jeans. For eg – when washing high-waisted jeans or black ripped jeans, this step will avoid any damage to the buttons,
How to maintain fabric quality when washing denim jeans?
Step 3: Don’t strangle your jeans. Also, bleach is not your friend!
Denims are known to be rough, tough, sturdy, and look good when worn for long periods. But when wet, the fabric and thread can be delicate. So do not twist the jeans in order to wrangle the water out of them. Let them air dry!
Also, we think it goes without saying, do not bleach your BLACK jeans.
For distressed and ripped jeans this is especially important so as to retain the look as you first purchased it from the store.
How to retain the structure of denim jeans?
Step 4: Iron?
While it is not the norm nor a need to iron your denim jeans if at any given point you must iron your jeans, do it with a cool iron. Yes, cool ironing works, and denim jeans are easy to straighten out, they do not fold into any harsh creases as it is a thicker material. For eg – Skinny jeans take the shape of the legs and curves, whereas bootcut jeans boast an engineered outline that shouldn’t be out. The same applies to a straight fit or tapered black denim jeans
We strive to empower our sustainable community with the most optimal options to wear their American Eagle jeans for as long as they can, as comfortably as they can!
